The Guitar Learning Analogy

Imagine learning to play guitar – it requires multiple lessons and practice to develop the neural pathways for finger motion, reading music, and coordinating movements. Similarly, when TBI damages neural pathways, repeated stimulation sessions are necessary to rebuild these connections properly.

Neuromodulation Treatments for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-concussive Symptoms

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is the most studied neuromodulation approach for mTBI (four studies for depression, four for headache, one for cognitive impairment, and two for global post-concussive symptoms) with promising results for post-concussive depression and headache.

TMS can aid in recovery from a TBI by stimulating areas of the brain that may have been damaged. TBIs can impact cognitive functions such as memory, emotional regulation, focus, and concentration. TMS helps restore connectivity in neural pathways involved in these processes, supporting smoother recovery with better outcomes.

Your TMS treatment plan will be tailored to you and your specific symptoms. By focusing on restoring integrity to affected neural pathways, we often see improvement across multiple cognitive and emotional areas.

Some patients report a return of symptoms after treatment. The good news is that most patients who require boosters are back to feeling great again after just a few “touch-up” sessions. Every patient's TBI is unique and their healing time can vary.

TMS is considered safe. It has been studied extensively and approved by the FDA for nearly 20 years. Our team does a thorough intake to ensure your safety throughout the process.

TMS works by using magnetic impulses to either inhibit overactive areas of the brain or excite underactive areas of the brain. The energy that is emitted stimulates neurons in the brain and can aid in relieving symptoms related to mood, energy, and cognitive function.

Many patients experience no side effects while undergoing TMS. Some patients report having a headache the first few days, which can go away with over-the-counter pain medications.

Sessions are relatively quick, with many lasting up to about 30 minutes, including set-up and stimulation. Staff will place a tracker on your face, and a coil on your head. You will feel mild to moderate taps on your head that have been described as a "woodpecker" sensation. Our staff aims to be punctual and efficient with your treatment as we know many of our patients have busy lives.

Some notice improvements early; most see steady progress within a few weeks. Everyone’s journey is unique, and we support yours—every step of the way.

Yes! We highly recommend and encourage psychotherapy alongside TMS therapy.  We have providers we can recommend to you if you do not already have a therapist.

We offer flexible options—including cash pay and support with lien-based personal injury billing—because healing shouldn’t wait.

Yes, the entire process, protocol and oversight are quite different when you come in through an attorney under lien. If you'd like to receive treatment as a result of an ongoing case, please contact your attorney to ask whether treatment with BrainStim Centers would be viable option.
