What is TBI / Brain Injury ?

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) defines TBI, or Traumatic Brain Injury, as “an injury that affects how the brain works. It may be caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or penetrating injury (such as from a gunshot) to the head.”

And TBIs can be mild, moderate, or severe. When looking at the mild end of the concussion spectrum, the Mayo Clinic defines a mild TBI or concussion as “a traumatic brain injury that affects your brain function. Effects are usually temporary but can include headaches and problems with concentration, memory, balance, and coordination

However, while a TBI may be medically referred to as “mild” since it’s not life-threatening, the results can be anything but mild. When your head suddenly hits an object or when it moves violently back and forth (such as in a car accident), your brain can bounce around or twist in the skull. This can also cause chemical changes in your brain or brain cell damage. And these changes may last a lifetime.

Then there are the more serious injuries, such as a moderate or severe TBI. These may lead to lifelong health problems that may affect all aspects of a person’s life. People with severe TBI must be hospitalized, sometimes long-term. Additionally, they may need rehabilitation for memory, learning, coordination, speech, and other senses.

    Frequently Asked Questions

TMS can aid in recovery from a TBI by stimulating areas of the brain that may have been damaged. TBIs can impact cognitive functions such as memory, emotional regulation, focus, and concentration. TMS helps restore connectivity in neural pathways involved in these processes, supporting smoother recovery with better outcomes.

Your TMS treatment plan will be tailored to you and your specific symptoms. By focusing on restoring integrity to affected neural pathways, we often see improvement across multiple cognitive and emotional areas.

Some patients report a return of symptoms after treatment. The good news is that most patients who require boosters are back to feeling great again after just a few “touch-up” sessions. Every patient's TBI is unique and their healing time can vary.

TMS is considered safe. It has been studied extensively and approved by the FDA for nearly 20 years. Our team does a thorough intake to ensure your safety throughout the process.

TMS works by using magnetic impulses to either inhibit overactive areas of the brain or excite underactive areas of the brain. The energy that is emitted stimulates neurons in the brain and can aid in relieving symptoms related to mood, energy, and cognitive function.

Many patients experience no side effects while undergoing TMS. Some patients report having a headache the first few days, which can go away with over-the-counter NSAIDs.

Sessions relatively quick, with many lasting up to about 30 minutes, including set-up and stimulation. Staff will place a tracker on your face, and a coil on your head. You will feel mild to moderate taps on your head that have been described as a "woodpecker" sensation.  Our staff aims to be punctual and efficient with your treatment as we know many of our patients can have busy lives.

Every patient is different. Some feel better right away, and some feel better after a few weeks. Your provider/technician will talk more with you about all of the normal reactions.

Yes! We highly recommend and encourage psychotherapy alongside TMS therapy.  We have providers we can recommend to you if you do not already have a therapist.

Unfortunately insurance will not cover the cost of treatment at this time. There is only a cash option.
