TMS Therapy for Autism

What is Autism?

Autism spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a developmental condition characterized by challenges in social interaction, communication, and restricted or repetitive behaviors. Individuals with autism may experience difficulties with sensory processing, emotional regulation, and forming relationships.  Scientific evidence shows that TMS can improve brain communication (Oberman, 2015).

Process to get Treatment

Unfortunately, insurance does not cover the cost of our TMS treatment for autism. We generally recommend that you start with an initial qEEG, receive 10 treatments (2 weeks) and then get a post qEEG to look at the changes that have occurred as a result of treatment. Assuming you wish to continue, we’d treat for another 10 treatments (2 weeks).  30 treatments is the typical length of an ASD treatment round.

Yes, TMS has been shown to be safe and effective in young children. BrainStim has treated patients as young as 3 years old. Our team goes above and beyond to ensure each patient receives the highest level of safety and care.

We see many children across the spectrum including both nonverbal and verbal patients. Our technicians would need to setup a free  appointment to evaluate your child in order to determine if they are right for TMS. At that appointment, we can show you the equipment and answer any questions you may have on the TMS treatment program.

TMS is considered safe. It has been studied extensively and approved by the FDA for nearly 20 years. Our team does a thorough intake to ensure your safety throughout the process.

TMS works by using magnetic impulses to either inhibit overactive areas of the brain or excite underactive areas of the brain. The energy that is emitted stimulates neurons in the brain and can aid in relieving symptoms related to mood, energy, and cognitive function.

Many patients experience no side effects while undergoing TMS. Some patients report having a headache the first few days, which can go away with over-the-counter NSAIDs.

Sessions relatively quick, with many lasting up to about 30 minutes, including set-up and stimulation. Staff will place a tracker on your face, and a coil on your head. You will feel mild to moderate taps on your head that have been described as a "woodpecker" sensation.  Our staff aims to be punctual and efficient with your treatment as we know many of our patients can have busy lives.

Every patient is different. Some feel better right away, and some feel better after a few weeks. Your provider/technician will talk more with you about all of the normal reactions.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), also known as electroshock therapy, is a psychiatric treatment that involves inducing a brief seizure in a patient under anesthesia to manage severe mental health conditions, particularly treatment-resistant depression and bipolar disorder. In addition to requiring anesthesia, ECT can cause memory loss and can have intense side effects.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) does not require anesthesia and has no long term side effects. It is safe for all ages.

Unfortunately, this is unlikely to happen with TMS at this time.

Yes! We highly recommend and encourage ABA therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy alongside TMS therapy.

Insurance will cover the cost of treatment for treatment resistant depression as long as you meet the necessary criteria. Each insurance company has different acceptance criteria, so please contact our offices so that we can run eligibility and benefits to tell you exactly what your financial obligation would be assuming you qualify for treatment.
